How often does 2002 Golf need brake job?

Bought a 2002 VW Golf with 73,500 miles. Guy I bought it from bought it new and said he never had a brake job so I figured I would need a brake job. Took it to repair shop, guy checked it out, said brakes are good.. Needed 2nd opinion, took it to VW dealer, guy said still some pads left, come back later.

Guy I bought the car from obviously took good care of the car but Do these cars really go that long without needing brake jobs? (I just want to be safe)

thanks

Almost any car will have brakes that last a long time if the driver uses the brakes appropriately and does not ride the brakes and/or tailgate. My '95 Buick (purchased new) did not need a brake job until well past 80,000 miles. Obviously the previous owner was a smart driver.

I don't know about a Golf, but my 95 Passat went close to 90,000 miles on its first set of pads. My 2002 A4 now has 82,000 on its first set.

also depends on the driving route (commuter, freeway traffic, not a lot of bumper to bumper = less wear). city driving...lots more wear. it's hard to really put a mileage limit on brakes.

it's also further complicated by the pads themselves. some automakers use softer pads that stop great, are quiet, but wear out fast. harder pads might not grip as well, might be noisier, but last longer. depends on what the automaker is going for when they spec out the brakes.

Brake pad wear is highly dependent on driving habits and conditions.

73,000 highway miles will use up a lot less brake pad than 73,000 city miles. Likewise, a driver who tries to smooth out changes in speed will use up less brake pad than one who races up to traffic slowdowns and slams on the brakes.

Have a '95 Golf III that had 93k on the fronts and 103k on the rear brakes before they were replaced.........

OK good info here. I won't worry about this any more for a while.

- and thanks for not telling me to just look in the manual for the car which I was afraid somebody was going to do but which I already did!
