Boxter brake job - always need rotors?

My '97 boxter's brakes were squeaking, which I assumed meant I needed pads. My (honest) mechanic said they had 40% of their life left in them, and that the squeaking didnt mean anything, but that there was nothing I could do (short of a brake job) to make it go away.

Question 1) Does this sound right? I'm happy the brakes dont need work but the squeaking is annoying.

The mechanic went on to say that when it was time to get the brakes done, I woudl have to replace both the pads and the rotors. He said that this is how things were done on a boxter due to metal compounds.

Question 2) So there is no such thing as just getting new pads on a Boxter?

Thanks for the help!

Agreed, our Boxster's brakes squeak a lot. We deal with it.

Sure; if there is life left in the rotors, I'd re-use them. But, the difference in price between re-finishing them and new ones is penies.

PS: Parts for new rotors and pads is about $150 (from internet suppliers); labor is less than one hour, so don't pay more than $225.

My Porsche dealer said basically the same thing about the squeaking. It's because the pads are metallic.
