Jetta 1.8T

Just bought a new (to me) 01 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg, replacing my faithful, but recently waning, 93 Golf. What a huge difference in everything, the power, acceleration, etc. Everything in the car is such an upgrade from what I am used to...especially the horsepower of the engine. I was looking for a replacement to my Golf to be a Golf, but soon as I drove the Jetta, it was game over.

Glad you're happy with your new car...but I'm confused by your reasoning on picking the Jetta. You do realize that there are many Golfs/GTis out there with the same motor and accoutrements, right?

and they are lighter, and most likely handle better.

Jetta's are more plentiful on the market, especially if you want 4 doors...

Meh. Says he wanted a Golf, loved the Golf. Bought the Jetta apparently because he liked the power and the plush. And as you say, basically the same car...so why no more Golf love?

Just saying, is all.

Yah, well he was in the market for a Golf, great car (we've got two... one's a TDI, one's a two-point-slow) and found a 1.8T Jetta that he fell in love with... If you aren't attached to the hatchback of the Golf the switch is quite painless... I prefer the Golf too, but if an offer came up for a 1.8T Jetta (or the Mk5) for good value, I might switch (getting bored of my diesel, I'm still young, I need one relatively fast car before I settle down - the 2.0L I hardly ever drive - only when my TDI is in the shop)

Actually, I was at the lot to test drive a Golf TDI, which was nice, but really ugly inside (light grey interior, dogs, smoked in, etc), and there was the Jetta I ended up getting right beside it. We drove it, liked it, it got an all clear my a trusted mechanic, and done deal.

I had always had Golf's (and 86 and 93) and did like the hatch back and may miss it but......I am a windsurfer, surfer, and snowboarder and after having so much wet stuff in my 93 the floor turned to swiss cheese. I bought a Thule hard box for the top, which meant that nothing has to go in the car anymore. This meant that the hatch wasn't so important anymore since nothing goes inside the car but people.

Golf's are easy to find around, but all the ones we drove were duds. I hadn't had a Jetta before, I figured I'd give it a shot. I had thought abuot getting a TDI for the gas mileage, and it is odd that I went the exact other direction and got a car that needs 91 octane, but it was just a matter of really liking the car, and wanting a change. The 2.0L version didn't really do much for me in terms of performance, and the

1.8T in the Golf was eally hard to find.

Seems there is an upside and downside to every model and every engine, so we will see about see what I think abuot the Jetta. 20km's so far, and liking it very much.
