knocking in front suspension -- 99 passat

Jun 25, 2004 3 Replies

When the car hits certain bumps, or especially when the body twists, there is a knocking from the front left suspension. Feels like someone is under the car, hitting it with his fist, sort of.

Obviously something is loose on the suspension, but are there particularly likely candidates? I'm going to have the car in the shop monday for the rear bearing.

Have the same problem with a 99 GLS 1.8T. Mechanic could not find where it was coming from. Let me know if you do find it!

Thanks!

Could be control arms (expensive) or sway bar links (not so expensive).

particularly

Ours turned out to be mechanical wear on the anti-sway bars.

That and the rear bearing ran $330 at a local garage.
