Rear Suspension issue

OK, last time, you seem to be in Canada, and nowhere that I can possibly imagine in Canada is it tomorrow already. Fix your posting date/time...

If the noise is in the front, most likely it's the slotted round nut in the upper strut mount that need to be tightened.

Probably. The heavier the VW the less it takes for the suspension to wear out.

Some old Golfs and even A1s still have original suspensions without noise due to less weight.

Yah, we had original on our 91' Golf, it was still working well.

Oh. It's probably a worn bump stop. No biggie. Your shocks are probably getting tired and if you go over a curb of a driveway or something just right you will get this noise. You might want to check your brake system to see if anything is causing them to make that noise. The rear is rather simple compared to the front. I would take the wheel off and start grabbing the shock and coil. You also should check your wheel bearings to maybe they need to be packed with grease.

Hi.

Have 95000kms on my 99.5 Golf. For a little while now i've noticed that when I go over certain bumps (mainly driveway enterance curbs, and some cracks in the road) my suspension makes a rather loud noise, almost like a cracking kind of bang (kinda hard to describe), sounds like the wheel is just slamming back down to the pavement or something. I also hear some slightly clunking as I drive along over normal bumps - I removed everything from my trunk, but it still makes noise.

The suspension feels okay on the road, while driving... And the car handles fine. When we got a couple guys from work to push down on my bumper, then we pushed down on my friends 2003 Golf, we noticed his was a little firmer, and it returned to normal position quickly, while mine had a bit more of a rebound, then back to level.... I figure this is just because my suspension is older.

Is it likely that after 5 years and almost 100K Kms my rear suspension is shot?

I booked it in at the shop today... The service tech mentioned bump stops, or perhaps a blown bushing - he said shock failure for my area is higher then 100K Kms (roads are decent, some bad spots, I try to avoid the worst of it)

I took VC last Friday and today is my last VC day. Anyway. So far I did:

New coolant system for my 94 YJ Jeep Sahara Edition. New oil sender, temp sensor, temp switch.

Undercarrage rust work on my 94 Jetta. The passenger rocker panel was the worst. I actually lost metal there.

Cambelt, v-belts, water pump, thermostat, tensioner for the 86 Golf Diesl.

283700 miles and still going strong even though I recently bought it for my GF so we could sell her 86 Honda HB. I still like to drive it more so I will probably let her drive my Jetta. Maybe!!! :)

Still have to get some hardware for the diesel before it is finish.

BTW, that was a real PITA job because of the AC compressor bracket. The waterpump was real noisy but did not leak. Go figure. The diesel noise masks that kind of thing. :-)

Now if I could only restore it like Charles Russo's rabbit. :-)
