My Jetta's engine wants to stall after it travels about 50 yards, I can keep it from stalling by feathering the pedal. Top speed is about 20 mph. any help?

Fuel filter is one possibility.
Fuel pump and/or fuel filter. Will it idle steadily for as long as you leave it running? And then it craps out as soon as you give it some pedal? That's a common indicator of fuel delivery problems. Either because of gunk having blocked up the fuel filter or the pump being unable to provide consistent fuel pressure.
Replace the fuel filter first, they're cheap. If that doesn't solve it then you can either replace the pump outright or test the pressure it's providing. This requires specialized equipment that might end up costing more than a pump.
There are other possibilities involving air flow sensors. You may be able to attach a diagnostic computer to it and see what codes have already been detected.
