Passat 98, start problems and engine losing power

Hi!

I've got a 98 Passat 1,8 Trendline. (owners nightmare)

Here's the problem:

I sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10 times) have trouble starting my car. The starter runs but the engine never start. The solution up to now has been to wait for 10 minutes to a couple of hours and try start again, then it runs as a clock. Another problem, is that the car, when passing 3500-3800 RPM, seems to choke itself (loose power). 2 different VW dealers has looked at the problem, but have given up after checking cabling and 19 or so hallgivers. The error message given is "fault in Hallgiver". Don't know if hallgiver is what it's called in english.

I also had the same trouble (car not starting) last year. Then they changed something in the ignitionlock (The place you put the key :-) is that what it's called in english?). The car was then OK until now.

Can anyone put an end to my nightmare?

Try the engine coolant sensor first. Over here in the USA they go for about $25
