question of what 89 GTI is worth

hello folks, my friend has a 1989 GTI 16v in pretty decent shape, minor dents and such. it has 170k on it. all original. He wants my 1996 Jetta GL which has a brand new tranny in it ( 5 speed ) and 130K, I told him his car plus $2500 but he thinks that is too much... my jetta has no dents and runs perfect... what do you guys think?

Really in this area a 16V isn't worth much at all. I sold one a while back for $1500, I think that was a little cheap (to a friend) but $2000 outright for his car is about right I think

Not knowing what options the car has, the GTI is worth $675 US according to Kelly's Blue Book.

Not much, but the value can vary quite a bit with condition. Check Kelley Blue Book online

by entering your zipcode, equipment level, and condition. Since most people will consult KBB when deciding what to pay, this will be a good indicator of market value. Prepare to be unimpressed. According to KBB, I increased the market value of my 1987 GTI 8V by 50% by not removing the spare change from under my seat the last time I vacuumed. No worries, the car's worth a great deal more to me than anyone would ever be willing to pay for it.

I wouldn't do it. The 16v is way more a money pit than your 96 Jetta GL. I have both and I can tell you my 94 Jetta will continue to run way longer. I have 205K miles on my Jetta while the 16V only has 138K miles. The Jetta is much more reliable...
