rebuild vacuum pump

Let me start by saying that I'm not exactly mechanically inclined. My first indication of this was when I was about 13 years old and I thought that if I took my bike apart, and cleaned all the parts that I could make it better. Taking it apart was no problem. Putting it back together again presented insurmountable difficulties. I ended up putting the bike in a box and bringing it to a shop to re-assemble.

OK...so, with that said, I was thinking that I might try and rebuild this vacuum pump myself... Seems simple enough. ??? I don't have a manual or repair book yet and haven't been able to find any detailed instructions on what this profect will look like.

Has anyone out there ever reuilt one of these? Is there going to be a bunch of parts in there that are going to come popping out and I will need to keep track of? Is there any bleeding (other than my knuckles) that will have to be done?

Going to NAPA today to see if they have the kit. Not sure if I'm going to try this myself yet, or ask my VW guru friend to help. What do you think?

I had a 1981 Rabbit diesel, and needed to rebuild the vacuum pump. It's been such a long time, I can't remember exactly how it came out, but I think I bought the rebuild kit from NAPA, and at least took the pump apart to see what it involved. I think the kit is mainly a diaphragm and a one-way valve. If I did it, it came out o.k. There's also the chance that I took the pump off my '80 diesel and used that. In any case, it doesn't seem like the kit was too difficult to install. You just have to make sure that the things go in the right way, even if they look the same both ways. Just look carefully. And there's no bleeding involved, other than, as you mentioned, you knuckles if you're not careful.

Two kinds of pumps, one is a diaphram pump usually on the older vehicles. Two rebuild kits for it, one is a kit w/ seals and the diaphram the other kit has the pair of plastic check valves. Fairly easy to repair, pull it out, open it up, replace the broken parts, reassemble and put it back in. The newer pump is rotary and they are usually a lot more reliable.
