[REQ]: Golf TDI

I'm thinking about getting a new (or at least newer) car next year, and one of my big requirements is very good MPG. Since the other big requirement is price, I'm not really eager to shell out the big bucks for the Prius, Civic Hybrid, or Insight, so the Golf TDI looks attractive. Anybody here got some owner's stories? How's the space? I'm a large six-footer, so this is a important issue.

I didn't realize there'd be a big price saving for the TDI vs the others.

We have an 02 TDI Jetta wagon. I imagine the interior seating is the same for the Golf. The front seats are very comfortable for me - I'm

6'2" and 200 lb. We (2 people) have just driven coast to coast in more comfort than any other car we've owned. (Sirius Radio helped, too.)

With the front seats set for normal sized people the rear seat leg room is adequate only for children. When adults are seated in the back, my front seat has to be moved forward to a position that is only tolerable for local driving. The same applies when the wagon's rear seats are folded flat for cargo.

Bottom line: a great vehicle for 2 adults and 2 small children (at most). Not for 3 person car pooling.

I am also 6'2" and would endorse the comments below. We have an '02 Jetta used around Vancouver Canada. Love the engine, handling, fit and finish, but rear seating with me driving is a problem. As has been said, slow to warm up in winter, but heated seats handles personnal comfort. Latest models have PD injection which gives better peformance.

I'm 6' 1" and love my 2001 Golf TDI. Plenty of cargo space, leg and head room, and an average of 47.5 mpg. TDIs take longer to break in than gas engines, so don't be shocked if your milage varies at first.
