The TDI's are fantastic! I've got a 99.5 jetta and have averaged 45 mpg for over 113k miles. However in the winter they warm up very slowly so if your in a colder climate and don't drive at least 20 miles one way get a gasser. Be aware the "hybrids" don't get any ways near their rated MPG. TDI's hold their value very well and you may look a long while for a good used one. When you find it remember, "he who hesitates is lost" so act quick.
I'm thinking about getting a new (or at least newer) car next year, and one
