scirocco steering shaft bearing

Dec 26, 2004 2 Replies

Hello.

I have an '81 Scirocco on which the bottom bearing in the steering column has dropped out, along with what appears to be a broken plastic retainer. My '75-'81 Clymer manual is no help--it does not even show or mention any bearings in the "column tube." Can anyone tell me what is involved in getting the bearing back into the tube? I have not been able to push it back in by hand with the steering column still in place.

My suspicion is that what came out is actually just the roller part of a press-fit bearing that has come apart.

Thanks, nf

Thanks much for the info! Unfortunately I already gave the car to a mechanic who's worked on it in the past. He quoted me $150 to replace the bearing, then called me after I'd dropped the car off to let me know he could not find a replacement.

I wasn't able to shove the bearing back up into the race. Maybe I just didn't spend enough time on it. My workshop is the driveway, and we're in the midst of an extended rainstorm.
