Starting probs with Golf GTI 1988

Aug 15, 2006 4 Replies

Hi i bought a golf gti off someone who changed the engine, it turns over fine and has signs of a spark from all four leads, not firing at all though, changed the leads and disi cap + rotor arm still not starting!!!

If there is any silly things that might not start it then could someone please let me know, spark plugs look a bit s*it so ill change them, also there is defently fuel as it starting pissing fuel out every where because of a leaking petrol pipe.

Also when the ignition is on is the oil light suppose to flash?

Re: oil light, yes, will go on until the engine runs and builds up enough oil pressure and the light will/should go out.

Can you provide a bit more background. Has the eng> Also when the ignition is on is the oil light suppose to flash?

yes the engine did run, its been sitting around for about five years, it turns over, i have changed the spark plugs but still not firing. When i turn the engine over it keeps goin then suddenly it stops, like duh, then i turn it over again and it keeps goin then does it again, after turning it over i took out a spark plug and it smelt of petrol so obviously its not igniting it, could it be the distributer/coil, or possibly the timing?

check the timing belt for missing teeth which throws the engine timing off.

i got it started now, it was the timing on the distributer which wasnt starting it, the timing was far 2 advanced, thanks for your help anyway
