This is the aircooled forum (bugs, buses, ghias, etc). You may want to ask the rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled forum. I've worked on some older Jettas, so - until you get help there - maybe the following is of use to you:

First make sure your distributor rotor is indeed turning. If it isn't turning, your timing belt/chain may be broken. Also check the voltage across the coil's common (primary/secondary common connection, that is) and make sure you see 12V with the key in 'start'. If you don't see 12V, trace it back through the connector - it may go to a relay and, eventually, the ignition switch. If you see 12V there, put a small 12V bulb (a small low current radio shack bulb - not a turn signal light) across the coil primary with some clip leads. When you crank the car, you should see bulb flash. If you don't, you might have an issue with the ignition module, crank sensor, etc.

When you get an old aircooled vw, come back any time :) Remco

LOL - I got that right away -- you didn't even have to say what a 'p' was for me to laugh.

:-) for me it would be a lot easier if you use euros. I will be in UK on the end of this month and I have buy libras. I think that this golf gti is the only thing cheap in UK ;-)

Hey João,

Going to the UK? Business or pleasure? Cool, me too, also at the end of feb... Well that is... Scotland (honeymoon). I hope not to have driving problems.. since they drive at the 'wrong' side of the road :)

It will be Business near London. For pleasure I would go to Brazil :-) I never drove in UK. At the beginning is s little scaring being sitting on the left with no steering wheel and you will try to enter the car for the wrong side. Be attention when you are walking because you will first look for the wrong side to cross the roads (left) and you will be hit for the right. (LOOK RIGHT) I hope that everything goes fine with your honeymoon :-)

I'm hoping for some snow... and of course some fire place evenings :o)

We are going to Loch Ness, renting a cottage there (Abriachan). Sounds familiar? I believe it's near the 'border' of the highlands, correct? Definatelly will travel around, Ben Nevis, Glencoe... Too much to see in so little time... :( Any pointers??

Thanks, Roger
