Using non VW oil filter?

The "Free" work is one of the things the VW dealer service manager used to rip me off with. The last time I brought my car in to VW was for a failed, recall replaced brake light switch. I had originally brought the car in for not being able to put the car into drive from park sometimes. They said it was a sticky shift button. The next week the check engine light came on with the same problem. When I brought it back it was 3 days past the recall part's warranty. I explained that I had brought it in for the same thing minus the check engine light a week earlier. The service writer said that they have to go by when the problem is diagnosed but that the service manager would probably give me a "goodwill" repair. The manager called me and said he would not do the goodwill repair because I only do the free work at the dealer! He then said that they recommened the tire rotation and I declined. I declined the recommened brake pad replacement and hadn't done the 40,000 mile services yet! My milage was 39,998! I had had that work ( tire rotation and brakes) done at an independant mechanic for a huge amount less. I was charged $100 to diagnose the check engine light! When I reported this the VWA they said that the dealers are independant owners and it is up to their discretion! I called, wrote, emailed and yelled with no results. That is the last time my car darkened their garage! But I will be there for ECM's and TCM's because they have to do it and they're free!

VW parts carry a 1 year/12,000mile warranty, including the parts that are involved in a recall. $100 is a bit high to check for fault codes and get an idea which way to go from there. Our place charges $36 just to do the scan and 99.9% of the time we know what is needed. VW does sometimes "bend" the warranty rules, but that all depends of the service history of the car. "Goodwill" is for good customers... so maybe since you spend all your service dollars at an independent shop that were you should look for getting the issue repaired. Not knowing the full story I would have to agree with the dealers call! Now before you get all ticked off with my opinion since many here know I work for a dealer, I always don't side with other dealers in our area. We have some that don't do the best at repairing VW's and that's why we service most of their cars after the owners got feed up with them being unable to fix complex issues.
