Duramax pulling power

Heck I pull Powerstrokes and Dodge Rams that have 28 foot goosenecks loaded with beef cattle up hills, behind my Duramax with a 32 foot trailer loaded with Babe the Blue Ox and his cousins, doing 95! ;-)

What ever happened to the so called CAT powered GMC / Chevy pickups that was on the horizon that so much hype was raised about? Is it ever gonna happen? I can see CAT making a small engine, as they are now putting small 2 or 3 cylinder CAT diesels in the Cub Cadet line of Lawn and Garden tractors, so there should not be an excuse for not being able to put one in a pickup of 3/4 ton variety! The tractors prices are actually cheaper than a comparable Kubota or John Deere diesel is. HP is in the high teen or low twenties range. Visit my website:

CAT bought Perkins in 1997. The press release:

Those small 3 and 4 cylinder CAT's are really Perkins painted yellow instead of black. In the really small stuff they are another brand, which I don't recall. If you buy a small CAT generator, they sell you the Olympian line. It comes with a Perkins engine. FYI, Perkins used to have almost 40% of the world diesel market in off road diesels. Then they were bought out by a certain Detroit company and went to hell. Now CAT's bringing them back. They make a damn fine diesel that is cost competitive with the Isuzu's and others. I'd love to have a Perkins in a truck.

BTW, the small 3 cylinder John Deere engines were made in France, last I checked. Their distributors hate them, and they are very overpriced compared to the other guys like Kubota. It's why you don't see many small Deere tractors. Too expensive.

The Cat 3126-powered Chevy 3500 that was talked about a few years back never came to life. The motor was so heavy that it could only be fitted into trucks with a solid front axle, so that left out much of the 3500 and all of the 2500 series line up. In addition, the motor in question could be easily hopped up to mind-numbing amounts of torque that would melt any tranny and drive line that could be fitted into that truck chassis. Not that I wouldn't mind owning one just for the "wide-eyed-in-amazement" factor, but the practicality of putting the 3126 into a light duty truck just doesn't exist. The motor had to be limited to such an extent the cost of the Cat far exceeded the power it would provide in that form. To the best of my limited knowledge, only one test mule was ever produced.

But the custom truck builders got wind of the idea, and did something with it.

A friend of mine's father has a Cat powered Silverado.
