1994 Explorer Stuck in 4X4

Hi All,

I started having trouble with the ol' girl initially with the speedometer flickering and the cruise control responding to this flickering and hunting to try and maintain proper speed. Just a couple days ago I was pulling my trailer out of a snowbank and had it in 4X4. After pulling the trailer out, I attempted to take it out of four-wheel drive. The light was out, but the differential was still engaged. Yesterday, the light came on, but I still couldn't take it out of 4X4. I'm thinking it's either the speed sensor or else something wrong with the Electronic Shift Control Module. Also, is the light on the ESCM supposed to be on all the time? There is a little reset button that I've pressed a few times and the light comes on for about 1 minute but then goes out. Any help or previous experience with this problem would be appreciated.

The most common problem is the shift motor not responding. As a short term try at "fixing" it you can tap on it with a hammer a few times alternating with pushing the buttons to try and get it to move. The permanent fix is to remove it and clean it up. There are two plastic "stops" inside the motor that often get brittle and break which may allow it to over run it's end positrons and get stuck. There are detailed instructions for doing this on a website but I don't have it handy. A google search of the newsgroup archives would probably produce it.

I'm glad you were able to deduce that from this post. I'm still wondering what an ESCM is ;-) It that by chance the 4X4 light?

On a '94 Explorer, it's actually the module you will see above the driver's side rear wheel well next to the rear wiper washer motor. Wires enter it from the front and the back.

Hi all - I guess I'll add my 2 cents to this post. I have a 94 EB 4X4. I've got the same speedo problem as well as several others mentioned frequently in this forum - engine ping, rust at bottom of doorwalls, etc. Lots of helpful info out here. I'd like to try a few of these fixes myself but definitely am not a mechanic. Sounds like lots of people post problems and suggestions but was wondering if anyone knows of some internet sites that have detailed repair instructions. Looks like I'll have to go the CD or repair manual route myself as I haven't had much luck searching the web. You'd think that this info would be out there somewhere - everything else seems to be.

You can get a Ford repair manual on eBay for around $10 (including shipping). There is some information on

but it is limited and not thorough. Some more instructions for repairs can be found at

They have an Explorer/Mountaineer forum and lots of discussions on repairing Explorers but I find their "search" engine to be lacking.
