What did you pay for a re-paint job of your Hyundai ?

Threaded View

A small independent Auto Body Paint Shop  in my town in Florida
quoted me a firm price., of $1200  for my black 2002 SantaFe    There
isnt much preparation needed as the exterior is in good shape with
only some pine tree sap in several places and minor surface scratches
on a few of the panels ; also, some rust on the wiper arms, and faded
cowl.  He will paint the entire SUV  the same black color including
the bumpers black and wet sand the plastic headlight lenses because
they are foggy. .  2 coats of Urethane Black and 1 coat of clear .
Guaranteed for 3 years against peeling, fading, and cracking.  He
showed me a few other cars on his property that he recently painted
and from my eyes they all look very nice  with a deep luster.    I see
Maaco offers their Supreme Paint Job for $700  but im a little
skeptical of that.

How does $1200 sound ?   Thanks.

If you intend to keep it for a few years

then it is probably too much.

Sounds fair if it is really a good job.  I know someone that got a $700
paint job last week (not Maaco) and it looks like crap.  I don't have any
experience with Maaco and have no idea of the quality of their work.

When you divide the typical hourly rate for a tech into the cost after
taking out a $300-$400 for profit and materials you end up with about 4
hours labour for the whole job. I think that defines what sort of job it
will be. After having had a few cars with resprays I,d actually prefer to
have the slightly crappy original. Then again I suppose you cant judge
everybody by the junk work  of 1-2 others. I,d go for the more expensive,
preparation is almost everthing..

DO NOT go to MAACO, $700 is about 4 times as much as their 'job' is
worth, been there, done that, still fuming about it, and it was 12 years
ago (St. Pete MAACO)....

2 coats of Urethane Black and 1 coat of clear .

When I had my 02 Elantra repainted by a very good body shop in las Cruces,
NM the painter said a good coat of color and at least 3 good coats of clear.
it was about a $1400. pint job. Came out beautiful. the bad part was the i
traded it in for a new '11 Sonata a few months later. I seem to have
developed the ability to throw money away on cars to an art form ;-)>

It does not matter how $1200 sounds.  The real problem is in what he quoted
you.  2 coats of urethane black may or may not be enough - can't say without
seeing the car, but 1 coat of clear coat can never be enough.  Guaranteed
for three years?  Bull.  Can not be stated with one coat of clear coat.
Something is very wrong with this offer.  This is very close to an Earl
Schibe type of offer.
