Honestly,

Usenet is truly for diehard computer people with great skills. This group's archives are full of good information if you have fostered great search techniques, however it should be noted that activity for this group began a major decline about 5 years ago.

Jaguar communities such as Jaglovers.com and Motorcars limited have wonderful moderated forums with well trained people spending their time to try to help Jaguar owners. I am an ex-Roadfly member and found that the Jaguar groups were full of fanatical owners with very little input that helps.

Things may have changed for Roadfly Jaguar groups, but it really was lacking technical information not too long ago. However if you own a BMW, or in some cases a Mercedes, there is no better place to be as the Roadfly BMW/Mercedes groups are full of wonderful information and people.

Jaguar owners need to do everything possible to help themselves before going onto the internet for help and relying on others to solve their problems.

  1. Most public, main libraries have professional "Motor" shop manuals. These publications are broken down into groups such as - engine, performance, transmission, electrical, and so on. Searching these texts will require patience and cognitive ability as answers and information simply "flop" out of the book. YOU MUST GLEAN IT.

  1. When posting on the internet - Digest the problem you have and do your best to convey it accurately. In other words, it is very difficult for others to know, even understand what it is you might be trying to say. Many people come here and ask questions that are in the owners manual and then get upset when no-one answers. This is also the same for repeat questions that can be answered by intelligently searching the archives.

  2. Have you questioned your dealer as to any recalls or updates for your model. Joe Schmoe's repair shop might be able to diagnose some things, but it is the dealer that has technical updates and current information. Dealerships usually have a flat "Diagnostic" fee, which is typically under 0. Once the diagnostic has been performed you can be armed to - ask questions, access technical texts, and perform the repairs yourself.

  1. Are you mechanically and electronicly inclined? Realise that Jaguars are fairly complicated electrically and electronically. You may get the answers you searched for but you may lack the tools and know-how to tackle the repair.

  2. Dont throw money at your car; dont be a parts changer. Some people begin to hate an auto simply because they replaced ,000 in parts and still did not get it repaired. It is simply insane to replace an entire ignition system when the real problem was a set of bad spark plugs... it does happen.

This post and all the information above will not save this group, yet sitting around here and bitching about it does nothing constructive unless your whole aim is to troll here and lead people to "Your" group. So either be an active, constructive part of this group or go away to the group you represent.

Regards, DieInterim

All the Jag owners are pushing their cars along the shoulder of the road- once they get home, shower and get a nap they will reply.

Nonsense!

We spend most of the time under our cars, and only a little at the keyboard!

I bought the CD for my Jag along with the factory shop manual..............it answers most of my questions. I have a Xj6 and have little problems with it other than rust.

Consider that things change. People come and go. Groups like that are often dominated by a few individuals who eventually move on. For the most part they set the tone while present. It's the same all over the Internet.

So far Roadfly has saved me about $14,000.00. Their in-depth discussion of the timing chain tensioner issue on the XK series led me to pursue a repair I otherwise would not have done. And as it turned out my tensioners were on the brink of failure, with disastrous results and a huge repair bill looming. Now I have a much better car with a much better resale value which I can enjoy while I own it.

They have helped me upgrade my stereo. They have helped me find big discounts on interior detail parts. They have helped me find more information about my car than I could get anywhere else.

Then don't forget the extensive archives which you can search to your heart's content without so much as even emerging into the group itself.

So it's worked out for me. The braggarts have actually proven themselves to be the very most knowledgeable and have shared that knowledge. Sure, there is the usual crap to deal with but it is a somewhat moderated forum and despite the relatively loose nature of it, it has yet to get out of control.

This sounds excellent Paul. What is the name of the group (or link to it)?
