1952 Willys Jeep

Good evening all.

My boss has a 1952 Willys Jeep for sale. 4 cyl. Manual. 3 sticks on the floor. Jerry can. I believe Dana 44 front and rear. Newer top. Paint is faded, but the body is pretty good. I am interested in buying it from him. He wants to get $7500 for it. It starts and drives fine. Can someone fill me in on these older Jeeps and tell me if his price is way out of line. I am thinking of buying it and driving it on nice sunny days. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Greg

Well if it has dual D44's, it is not stock. It could have a D41 or D44 in rear but up front it should have a D27. It should also have a T-90

3 speed and a Dana18 Tcase with a 2.42 low range. Engine should be a Hurrican 134 F head. (F does not stand for flat though as this engine had exhaust valve in block and intake in head and is easy to tell apart for the original 134 Go Devil flat head used until 1950) The Hurrican was rated at 72 HP. As far as price, if it is stock, complete, in good running order, not dented up and not rusted it could indeed be worth close to 7500. I tend to place much higher value on ones like this over ones that have been chopped up and modernized. Those old jeeps were extremely well built compared to todays models.

Well, it always depends on a thousand things you can only guess at....!

I did a very quick scan and found these ranging from (uh, no pun intended, sure) U$D5700 (beater needing work) and roving all the way up to U$D24500 (perfect resto).

The ones that seemed to be in the condition you're describing were all priced higher than your U$S7500, perhaps ~U$D9000 being the mean.

SnoMan;

I have a 1951 CJ-2B. I had to rebuild the engine and while I had it apart I sent the starter in for service. Someone had converted it to key start and all the old kick start parts are gone. The service station threw away the electric start parts and now I have a problem. No one seems to know how to rebuild the startes for key start anymore and I can't find any information on the original starter parts. Can you give me any information or even pictures of what I need and how it is mounted on the jeep.

I have manuals here that go back to 59 on jeeps and covers both 134's. It says it could have two starter styles. I do have access to even older manuals. It would help if I had a picture of what we were dealing with.

Greg, without some pics its hard to tell but for $7500 it would have to be in darn good shape, i.e no rust at all, fairly fresh engine etc.. From your description I'd guess $4500-$5500 would be more in the range.

Have a look at completed auctions for Willys Jeeps on eBay to get a better idea of what they're going for. Depending on the exact model you may want to check on one of early CJ websites for more /better info-

You'll find more in a Factory Service Manual, one source here-

Be advised that if your starter was changed out the flywheel may have been changed as well as the different starters used different tooth counts.

You may also want to try a posting on the Willys Tech list,

a lot of guys there still run either mechanical or electric foot starters.

Have fun,
