camshaft timing 200 tdi

Hi there i am currently helping out a friend in need,his camshaft belt has broken his engine is a 2.5 diesel non turbo,looks identical to a 200 tdi minus a turbo.I need advice ref timing marks.The camshaft has a dot stamped on it and there are 2 arrows on the timing case back plate,the fuel injector pump has the letter t stamped on it and a dot ,also another dot further round.I presume the crankshaft keyway points upwards giving me top dead centre.I would be most grateful if anyone can help me out,just hope there are no bent valves.thanks RICKIE CREEGAN

Rickie;

  1. Looking at my genuine LR Workshop manual it says: Check that the timing marks inside the front cover line-up with the gear wheels, ie. the arrow on the front cover aligns with the crankshaft key and the dot on the camshaft gear aligns with the front cover web; (## which on the illustration is a web reinforced point for one of the cover mounting screws.)
  2. Turn the crankshaft until number one and four pistons are at T.D.C. and the woodruff key is aligned with the cast on arrow inside the front cover.
  3. Rotate the camshaft so that the cams are positioned with number 1 cylinder valves closed and number 4 cylinder valves on the "rock". The centre dot on the camshaft gear should now be aligned with the front cover web. (see ##) Hope this helps a little.
