106 diesel fuel filter problem

106 1.5 diesel N reg. The fuel filter looked like it was leaking so I changed it. I also notice a bit of a leak from above the filter so had a closer look at that. There's a plastic doofus held in place with a star style washer/circlip which turns out to be some sort of valve mounted within the fuel filter/thermostat housing. The flat O ring at the top is cracking and allows fuel to seep out and air to get in and so the car won't run. Conventional O rings won't fit as the section is wrong and a 20 mm one looks too large (a slightly oversize ring just won't compress enough to fit).

My father in law had a similar problem and tells me Peugeot won't sell the valve for less than £120 which is plainly stupid money for something no bigger than your average cigarette. He reckons to squirt in silicone sealant and to block up any holes in the valve end with it, as he says it's an over pressure valve. HBOL makes no mention of this valve naturally. I'm reluctant to try sealant in case it makes its way into the injectors and I have a feeling that one from a scrappie won't be in much better condition. Any other answers?

Trim it?

Don't see why. It's not a problem I've ever heard about on the TUD5 engine so it can't be that common a fault, you would think, so I would think a scrappie is worth a try. Fair range of choice, usually - any Metro, AX, 106 or Saxo fitted with the TUD5 engine.

Ok if you can get a reasonably even cut. I'm not too good with knives after my accident in May.

I might give it a go. I'll try (send the wife out to try) Pug first and another handy garage first. It's a right bastard to get out though.

Or buy the right size O ring.

How much do Peugeot reckon it costs?

Peugeot want to sell me the entire thermostat housing for £210. My local Cit specialist gave my wife an O ring which doesn't fit. I've sanded it down and I hope tomorrow when it's not raining to give it a go. Otherwise I feel a Blue Hylomar moment coming on.

Don't think I haven't tried. It's a square section one and appears to be in the order of rarety of hen's teeth.

- they say they have over 6000 sizes in stock...

I haven't dealt with them, but I've found lots of smallish companies are very happy to help in your situation - they might charge a couple of quid or might just send you one...

TRy your local bearing stockists, they can normally do O rings in less than 1mm step sizes. Otherwise buy the next size up, cut it at 45deg, reduce to the size you need & superglue the ends together (that's how we made ours on service calls).

As you have indicated it is not an O ring but a square section seal. Try and find a Classic car specialist nearby or an old fashioned motor factors and look for an oil filter element that has a similar sized square seal. Just looked at the size you quoted 20mm - inside or outside dia - this is quite small perhaps a centre seal on a CAV fuel filter. What is your location?

Gloucester. Not having verniers I'm not exactly sure of the size. It's a tad less than 20mm probably 19mm outside diameter.

The message from "Malc" contains these words:

Next time Lidl or Aldi have 'em, grab a set of their fingery verniers - they're about £8 and actually not bad at all.

Jolly helpful they were too. Thanks. They took the old O ring measured it with calipers and gave, gratis, my wife two possibilities and told her somewhere else on Innsworth Trading Estate who might also be able to help and then if they couldn't, told her to come back and they would order in some bits to fix it.

It works. They gave her an O ring which was a tad thinner and I got her to fit it and pressurise the system with the priming bulb whilst I was at work. No leaks, so when I got home all I had to do was to fit the inner O ring and the retaining washer and bleed the system 20 seconds of cranking and it started with no misfires.

Thanks chaps.
