Cable from Battery.

Hi

I have a Ford Focus 1.6TDCi on an 08 plate.

Whilst jumpstarting another vehicle i noted that the large cable fromt he +ve terminal has melted insulation, although the copper looks clean and bright and the insulation isnt charred. I am suspecting this is due to moisture ingress, not helped by the fact that the insulation is trimmed back from the crimp. This cable obviously needs replacing.

Does anyone know of the top of their head the diameter of the cable?

If you are sure that it's only the insulation that has deteriorated, why not just tape it up?

If you are looking to make up a replacement, you need to know the cross sectional area. I doubt anyone here will know that. If you really feel it needs replacement, it would be better to source it as a spare part from a dealer.

they often go like that. either stick some insulating tape round it or just buy a new cable purpose made for the car.

Ill give it a good coat of looking at and make a decision. It seems there has been some degree of heat build up, presumably from early morning freezing cold starts with head screens on an glow plugs running.

Ahhhh I didnt know they would sell such a part, would be worth extra cost for the ease.

Or maybe not, main stealer has quoted £101.80 for the part...

I can buy a lot of tape and shrink tube for that!

Parts prices have gone through the roof during the recession.

FWIW, I would use self-amalgamating tape on it.
