Try looking at the wires and connectors that go to the condenser mounted on the coil bracket and also to the resistor mounted on the coil bracket. At least that was the problem on my 1990 V6 Montero.

Use a logical approach rather than a shotgun (replacing parts).

  1. When you turn the IGN on, does the Check engine light turn on for about 5 seconds?
  2. Is the ECU reporting any error codes?
  3. Is the ECU getting +12v power through the MPI relay? This is the large can near the ECU. The MPI relay also provides power to the fuel pump.
  4. The MAF sensor (in the air filter) has a 4 (or 5?) pin connector. One pin provides +5V (yes, +5) from the ECU. This +5v also drives other sensors in the engine compartment.
  5. Assuming the above are OK. When you crank the engine, do you have spark as indicated by a timing light?
  6. Do you have fuel pressure? If the pump is working while you try to start, there will be residual pressure in the injector rail. Undo the two M6 bolts that secure the fuel input hose to the rail and GENTLY release the pipe. DON'T just pull it off or you'll get fuel everywhere.
  7. Is the cam timing correct? Set the engine to TDC and remove the timing belt cover to see if the cam sprocket marks line up.
