Check Engine Light

I have a 01 Eclipse and have had it in the shop five times since I purchased it new in October 2002 with the "check engine light." Every time I take it to the dealer they find nothing wrong and reset it. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am about to the point of disconnecting the light.

I haven't had that problem with the check engine light - but I have had a similar problem with the dealer. Since buying my 2001 GT it's never seemed to 'run right'. The dealer did find a loose vaccuum hose, which helped, but even now, it runs rough, especially at low speeds (< 30MPH). I've had the car in a few times, and they claim they can't find anything wrong with it. A couple of weeks ago I had the spark plugs and cables replaced (not by Mitsu), in the hope that meybe the car had a bad plug or cable since new, but this didn't help. I have no confidence in Mitsubishi dealers, and other messages in this group tend to echo that.

If it is warranteed then they should either fix what is wrong or change out the OBD II or computer that is passing incorrect error codes. Ruining with a true fault can cause some subsequent failures like Catalytic converters. Emmission system have more stringent warrantees.

I have had my 02 in twice now for the check engine light. The first timer they told me it was due to the gas cap being loose. My wife had filled up the car last time so I thought ok. Before I had to fill it up again it came back on. They said the code showed a vacuum leak indicative of the gas cap again. They replaced the gas cap, it hasn't been back on since. So either that was it or the guy fixed the computer so it wouldn't turn the check engine light on again.

I would go to an Autozone or wherever you can get a free OBD-II code reading done for free and get them to pull the codes for you when the light is on. At WORST you can see what the tester shows for a code yourself vs. trusting a dealership who isn't making any money off of you. don't have the autozone person erase the codes!!!

Once you have the code(s), have them look up what each code is and it'll have a decent description of each one. Bring the car back to the dealer and have them pull codes again. when they call and tell you they found nothing, tell them that YOU found some and give them the code #, and say if you don't want to fix it, that's fine, I'll go elsewhere after I call mitsubishi to voice my concerns. they'll fix whatever it is.

And yes, some ECU's just keep thinking it sees a bad code when in reality it doesn't, GM cars can have the computer tweaked to believe the code it sees is supposed to be there. Also, in California, smog check II is here and when you go for the smog inspection, they will pull codes on obd-ii vehicles and if they find any, you fail. even if the light is OFF! they must be erased from the ECU.!
