I wonder if the 02 snakes around differently once it's inside the engine? Is there an "inside" dipstick tube??

Nothing different inside the pan. The blocks, dipstick tubes and pans are identical except for on thing. The pan in the '96 had a hole for the level switch and '97+ cars no longer had it. A wise move by Ford since the switch would always tell you you had low oil if you were at 5.5 qts and parked on a downward slope.
