911SC shifter issue

X-No-Archive: Yes

Hey all;

I took my '78 SC out for a drive over the weekend. First and second gear worked fine, but when I shifted to third, I - for lack of a better term - couldn't find it. Eventually, it went in, but when I tried to downshift to second, I couldn't find that.

Pulling over, I played with the gearbox a bit. I can shift "vertically" fine (i.e., 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th, etc.). But when I try to shift "horizontally" (i.e. 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 1st) it seems like something isn't catching. I can eventually make the shift if I wiggle it enough, but it's not right. Additionally, the shifter seems to have way too much horizontal play, even when in gear.

I haven't had a chance to pull the shifter housing yet to see if I can see anything, but I thought I'd ask if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks!

Check the shifter bushings, remove small panel top of the center hump just in front of rear seat. Bushings are likely shot. Pelican parts is a good source. Below is from online catalog. Shifter Bushing Kit, 912E, 911 (1974-86), 911 Turbo (1976-88) PEL-BUSHKIT1 $26.95

Vern-

I've pulled the shifter mechanism and the rear plate. The only bushing I can find is right behind the shifter (#24 in the link below). I think I've found the problem, though. It looks like my guide plate (#7) is out of position. I can see some witness marks in the grease that make it look like it moved, and it's definitely not allowing the shifter free movement.

I'll change the front bushing since I'm in there, but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something.

In the lower left of the picture in this link is a joint that sort of looks like a U-Joint a sort of Tee arrangement. On the tee both side have a semi-hard plastic bushing. It is pretty common to have your symptoms when these bushings start to wear out. Also it is pretty common for one or both to completely fall out when they get badly worn, and things get very interesting at that point. Just think of the front of the transmission has a rod that goes into the interior, this joint is what mates shifting tube to the transmission.

'Kay. That's what I thought you meant. I'm changing that out along with a change to a short-shift kit (parts on the way). That bushing on mine is up front, which is why I was a bit confused. I didn't know if I should be looking for a bushing in the back access port, too.

Thanks for all the help!
