Trying to find engine number series for K16

Hi,

I've had a good search through newgroups and Google, but can't find an answer.

My brother in law (who admits to having no mechanical back ground) is having a less than happy time with his River 214 (hatch).

Originally he had the old head gasket go and put it into the only local garage that would honour his warranty. After much mucking about, gets the car back. The original engine was "too far gone" so one from a breaker was fitted. It failed its MOT last month and the emissions were "off the scale". He had a new ECU and Oxygen (?) sensor fitted. Still no joy, and the car smells very strongly of petrol.

He believes that the garage (who it turns out has a poor reputation) fitted an 1100cc engine. Now I can't find any trace of a 1.1litre engine, just 1.4 and upwards.

Before he goes back to the garage he needs more facts, so leaving that aspect aside,

1)Is there a 1.1 engine that goes straight into a 1.4 car?

2)To check the engines, where is the engine number located and what are the series for the 1.1 (?) 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8?

Cheers,

Sean

rover did manufacture a 1.1 ltr k series, but it was fitted to the metro's and 100's it wasnt a 16 valve either, although thats not to say the 16 valve head wouldnt have fitted......either way in standard form it was a single cam 8 valve engine. they did fit an 8 valve single cam to the rover 200's but this was in a 1.4 ltr version. what makes you think you have a 1.1 ltr there.......?

Well looking on the Rover parts disk the 200 was made with 1100 cc engines these came in both 16v and 8v flavours.
