air conditioning noise

Hello - My '97 900SE turbo AC makes a intermittent growling noise. It works well, it just makes a noise. Is it likely to be the compressor?

Also, I've read some about tubo mods - are there any good resources online to read about what's available?

Thanks,

justinb

My UK '96 900S 2.3i makes similar noises. When the magnetic clutch on the compressor is engaged, there is a constant growl from the compressor which I assume is normal although, when the car went in for an A/C service at my local main dealer, they adjusted the mounting of the compressor in some way which greatly reduced the sound.

The noise could also be the serpentine drive belt slipping (which my car seems to do in certain conditions). When the A/C compressor is engaged, many electrical accessories are putting load on the alternator, and the steering pump is labouring (all driven from the same belt IIRC), it seems to slip to a small degree creating a pretty loud growling sound - far louder than the compressor's growl in normal operation. Only lasts for about 4 or

5 seconds at a time though (until the compressor disengages).

The car has been in for Saab Dealer services since, and this behaviour was mentioned to them, but it still persists so I presume it is normal!

HTH, Tim.

Hi,

I have the same problem. Only when running idle sometime I hear this drilling sound like a steamship. As soon as I drive away the sound goes away.

Do You also have this sound only when running idle?

It definitely occurs when idling, but I can usually make it go away by goosing the engine a little bit. It happens while driving as well, it's just not very noticeable, what with the road/wind noise. I'd pick up another compressor, but I don't want to spend the money unless that's what the problem is.

What's the best way to tell if your compressor is going pear-shaped?
