1990 Pontiac Grandam problem with the heater speed control

I recently bought a 90 Grand am LE that has a problem with the bower speed control not working on anything but high. I ohmed the switch out and it appears to be good. Where is the resistor asm located for this and could there be any other problem that is not obvious ?

Thanks, Steve m...

The resistor for the fan is definitely the problem. When they fail, the fan only works on High. I don't know where it is on your car, but you could buy one, then look for it. That's how I figure out where a lot of parts are, I buy one (or least ask at an automotive shop to look at the part), then look for it on my car. You could also buy a shop manual for your car or hope that someone on this list can tell you where it is, but the resistor is definitely the problem.

If you haven't found the resistor yet, I believe it's to be found on the ductwork leading from the blower to the heater core. Pretty much psgr. side firewall area. From the outside it'll look like a flat triangle/square with two screws holding it into the ductwork with an electrical connector. When you take it out there'll be a couple of loops of wire - more like a thick lightbulb filament than the resistor you're probably thinking of. I can email you a pic of the location on my wife's Beretta if you can't find it. IIRC most GM's of that vintage I've seen use a similar setup.

Ray email "myname" at rollingviolation.com if you need a pic.
