Battery group size codes?

Just curious as to what the letters in a battery group size code means.

For example, for my van I see the following size:

- 75

- 75DT

- 75DTO

The van uses side terminals.

I assume that DT = both posts and side terminals, but what does DTO signify?

*IF* I remember correctly, the "O" indicates swapped terminals - 75 is a "regular" post version. 75DT is a dual-terminal (posts and side terminals, as you've guessed) version 75DTO is a dual-terminal, swapped terminals version.

I hear you asking already... What does "swapped terminals" mean?

I forget which is the "usual" arrangement, but if you look down on the top of a "regular" version so you can read the label, the positive is on one side, the negative on the other. With the "swapped terminal" version, the positive and negative positions are reversed - so if a "Regular" has the positive on the left and negative on the right as you read the label, the "Swapped terminal" types are exactly the opposite - the positive is on the right, negative on the left. Otherwise, they're the same battery.

Not *MUCH* of a difference, but depending on the way the vehicle it's going into is set up, it can be enough to make the difference between being able to get the battery cables connected, and needing to go out and buy a new set of cables so you have enough cable to make the connection.

here's a chart that I found when trying to put a 12V battery in the stock battery box of my '55 STude

As for the "DT" and "DTO" I have no idea. I know "R" is generally reversed terminals; beyond that I don't know.
