04 RAV4 Question

Wife took the car for routine oil change and they were pushing a:

1) "Fuel injection kit."

2) "Clean fuel injection and throttle body."

The wife understands these guys push everything they can and declined. However, the car /is/ idling a little rough. Can anyone enlighten me as to what they're talking about. Never heard of a problem caused by a dirty throttle body. What /is/ a "fuel injection kit?"

TIA, Frank

I dont know what they are including as a "fuel injection kit". It might be as simple as O-rings, etc, which are expendables when you work on these systems.

I have had a vehicle of a different make that got to the point it wouldnt start easily, wouldnt idle, and would die at awkward moments. The mechanic, a friend of mine, told me that it was a fouled throttle body and it went all the way onto the inside surfaces of the valves. He performed the cleanout and the thing ran like new. So, yes, there are situations where this is a valid diagnosis.

Just out of curiosity, has your RAV4 developed any increased oil consumption? I've been reading about some RAV4 owners complaining of burning oil after 90k miles. Example link:

I've read that after 2009 RAV4 2.4l 4cyl motors were upgraded to 2.5l displacement and the problem was supposedly resolved. I just found this out by accident after researching synthetic oil recommendations for my new 2012 RAV4 2.5l.

Some links say that many new Toyota models leave the factory with 0W20 synthetic oil installed already. My manual says to use 5W20 or 0W20 -- with 0W20 being synthetic oil by default. This is sort of a paradox, because I was advised in the past to drive a new vehicle at least 1500 km with conventional oil during the break-in period, and then change to synthetic oil after the valves were seated properly. I have emailed my Toyota dealer and Toyota Canada asking if my model RAV4 left the factory with synthetic oil installed, but neither have replied yet.

I drive so infrequently, I was considering using Royal Purple synthetic oil and just changing it annually. My Canadian Tire started handling this brand of oil recently and it has good reviews. I used nothing but Quaker State synthetic oil on my 07 Corolla that I traded in and had no complaints.
