2000 TRD Taco, 3.4L: Tapping Noise at Idle

Hi,

My 2000 TRD 4x4 3.4L has 98k and 5k ago I had the timing belt, water pump, and the other belts changed. Basically the 90k servicing.

Now, 5k miles later I have developed a tapping that occurs only when I idle after driving 5+ miles. But the engine has no change in performance whatsoever and if I increase the tach on the engine (slowly) the tapping quickens then goes away.

New garage I went to for oil change says it may be the timing belt tensioner. Is there any other characteristics that would point in that direction? I hate to have to get the engine ripped apart again. And I don't think the timing belt work is still under a warranty.

Any advice...?? Hopefully it's some simple mechanical interference that won't affect anything..?? I'm sure it could be anything and I probably haven't described it well enough for a quick answer but what may be good is that there is no other performance issue with the engine at any speed.

Thanks in advance for any help,

--Bill

Loading thread data ...

I've got a 98, 3.4L tacoma, with 215k, still on the same factory belt, no tapping, ticking or problems at all... it's off roaded more than most, needed a couple axles, but that's it...

Why did you get a timing belt at 90k? did it break? that's quite unusual... and now you've got tapping? who's your mechanic? I'd wring his neck, cuz it sounds like he screwed up something...

I'd change to a thicker oil, see if it continues to do it.... thinning oil can make sounds appear like they never did before...

Possibility.... pull the belt cover off and see if there's anything loose flying around one of the pullies. Such as string, or a thread of the new belt parting at the edge.

Just a thought.
