Oil pressure and temperature

Thanks to everyone in response to my shifter question, and now I have another. Right now I just have the oil pressure idiot light. I know I can get and pressure sensor that goes in the same spot as the pressure switch for that light, my question is can I put a tee there and also put a temperature sensor there? The motor is a 1600 out of a 73

thanks Dave

It's a poor place to measure temp since it's not flowing there and is exposed to ambient.

There have been reams written about which is the *best* alternative location, but for the novice supplicant use either a sump or dipstick sender.

Hi! This link shows a similar set up to what I have.

the sump is a good place to take the temperature....plenty of flow and a good *average* of what the oil temp is overall.... when a sensor is put in place of the drainplug it is in the flow of oil going into the oilpump pickup...the berg dipstick measures the oil temp in the sump, you realize?

I would go with a CHT gauge first average temp is not what you want. You need to get an indication of were oil temps are hotest and that is up in the heads. You can cook a motor and see sump temps only a little high especially in colder weather.

Hey I made a mistake!

I retested my oil temperature today with the VDO oil temp dipstick.

It was about 93 degrees F outside.

I drove about 14 miles.

The oil temp gauge read about 40 degrees F hotter with the dipstick sender than at the oil pressure sender location with t-fitting set up.

Instead of about 180 degrees F the oil temp gauge read almost 220 degrees F with the dipstick sender.

My previous test must have been done on a cold day.

Eventually I would like to get an oil temp sender that replaces the oil relief valve plug like this one:
