Re: Rusty Bug

Where is "under the air intake" on a beetle? Do you mean the louvers right above the decklid and the area where the decklid hinges bolt on? Do you have a picture of the rust?

The area under the air intake is badly rusted on a 1966 bug I got recently. > Anyone know how to repair this area? I can't see how to get to it. Do you > cut it out? From the outside or inside? Is there replacement panels? > > Chuck

He probably means that place exactly rob. I was wondering that my self, i thought about media blasting since the louvers are welded in place and dont seem like they can come out. Of course its a bit too late for me now, the car has been painted, the louvers inside have peeled and the painter is long gone by now :-(

Chuck, here's the best place on the net for you in regards to restoring that area. Beware it's a lot of work. I can't remember which link it is, but it's one of these regarding paint.

the interesting info is towards the bottom of page 11.

Basically he drilled the spot welds out, removed the metal, painted it, then it got epoxied/welded back in. Then for the final body paint the painter stuffed the cavity with masking so the area could be painted without ruining the finish inside.
