91 940 Turbo fuel problem?

I have a 91 940 Turbo. A few days ago, I noticed engine hesitation coming up a hill. I noticed the fuel gauge was sitting on empty and suspected that I was running out of gas. Last night, with a half full tank, the same thing happened, only much worse. The car starts fine, but idles very roughly. The engine will not rev above 3,000 rpm in neutral beore cutting out. The car will not move faster than 5-10 mph. Luckily, the nearest repair shop is mostly downhill! I hate to turn the car over to a mechanic without having some idea of what might be going on. Suggestions? Many thanks! Post here or email to jmoche(at)jmoche.com.

Sounds very like the wiring of the Hall Effect sensor at the bottom of the distributor has a loose wire, especially if you are getting backfires. Check that the 3 pin plug on the bottom of your distributor is fully in and it doesn't wobble. If the plug is loose it's a fair indication that something in it is broken. I fixed my plug with epoxy, and the loose wire with a soldering iron. Still going strong.

Just checked it, and the plug seems fine. There is no backfiring, by the way. Thank you, Stuart.

Sounds like the system has gone into "limp home" mode from a dead (or disconnected) air mass meter. The computer substitutes a program that allows the car to run at low power settings (literally limp home).

On my car the injectors are quite loud, does the clicking increase with revs. If it stays steady it could be the air mass meter.

Another check you can do to check ignition is look at the engine in the dark (disconnect day lights if necessary) and look for HT leakage from a faulty lead or excessive flashing from the distributor. Having said that you should be able to rev with a missing cylinder spark.
