Can I paint plastic grill bars?

I want to paint the two horizontal plastic bars and the circle that goes around the VW emblem in the grill of my 02 GTI .Current color is Gray I want to change it to Black. I can't get the part off so I will tape it up. Question is, what kind of prep work and what paint should I use on the plastic? Thanks?.. Ps..I have too much time on my hands

Use a plastic primer. Check with your local auto paint supply. The plastic primer softens the plastic so that paint will stick to it. HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

The grilles in front of the vent openings on my bumper were originally body colored, and I wanted them black. I just matted down the existing paint with very fine sand paper and painted over with black semi-gloss Rustoleum (using a foam brush). It has been that way for over a year and still looks good. No flaking or peeling.

there's already a primer or some sort and a coating of existing paint... can't you go right over it?

********* If that's the case then yes, just scuff it off with a scuffpad & paint it. The grille on my Cabriolet (for example) came in black plastic - no paint. I assumed the gray GTI grille was the same. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

00 Jetta. I just snapped the grille/emblem piece out (gotta unhook the hood-release) and snapped the emblem out of it, cleaned it with some 409 and hit it with some flat black Rustoleum. Came out perfect. Wait till it dries and snap it all back together. Piece o' cake. Been on there for several K-miles and still looks good.
