Long Life Oil

I have recently purchased a new Audi which is filled with the Castrol SLX Longlife II Oil from new. When I press the service button on the dash I am told that the car will cover 19,000 miles before it's first service.

I am a great believer in regular oil changes to keep an engine tip top and the thought of my car going this distance on the same oil worries me to say the least. I was thinking of maybe changing it myself half way at around

9,000 miles. I want the engine to last.

I'd be interested to hear of other peoples experiences with the long life service concept - is there anyone out there whom has a high mileage car which has used the variable servicing? If so how is it running? Is this long life oil really that good?
