Ok, I know that side-to-side it is VERY bad to mix tire sizes. But, how doe sthe Quattro handle both fronts being %50 worn, while the rears are new? IE, how bad on the center dif is it?

Not optimum but not not disastrous either. Engineers build a safety factor into the system. To put it another way, how often do people worry about their differentials based on whether they drive on too many winding roads?

If the difference in circumference is less than 1-1/2 inches, then it's OK, provided the differnce is due to tire wear, and not because the tires are of different types.
Somewhere i read that Audi says that differential tire wear is OK -- even between a new tire and one worn down to the tread bars.
