Hey gang,



As you can tell by my email, I'm no mechanic but I have a question.



I have a 97 S-10 Blazer 4X4 that need brake pads in the front. The question is, do I need to worry about anything while swapping out the pads? Does the anti-lock brake sys cause any problems. My other blazer (89), I just pushed the piston out slapped in new pads and put the calipers back on.



What do I need the remove the caliper on the 97', a hex or a special tool? Any other tips would be appreciated.

Open the bleeder, put a hose on it and push the piston back. Then top off the reservior when done.

3/8" allen key. You can buy one that goes on a ratchet, that's the best way to go.

For a novice, do not mess with the bleeder as suggested. If you break it off (if it is seized) you are asking for more work. If you did have a bit more knowledge then yes that is an option.

3/8 allen key is what you need.

I would also recommend you get the rotors turned by a machine shop and repack the bearings. I would guess that is out of your scope of abilities, BUT it is something that needs to be considered.

OH and most of all, DO NOT UNDO BOTH CALIPERS before compressing the pistons. You will blow one right out of its bore, and again more work that you may not have the skills to fix.

Check your rear brakes. If they are worn out or nearly so, then all is well, replace the shoes. If you have plenty of brake shoe material left, then something is wrong. It is likely the self-adjusters are not working due to dirt, corrosion, or lack of lubrication.
