Hard starting 1998 Suburban

I have a 1998, K2500, 7.4 w/port injection that starts difficult by excessive cranking. The problem started out "mildy" a couple of years ago and has gotten gradually worse. It starts right fine the first time in the morning, then starts hard the rest of the day. When it starts hard it floods, and puts out some gassy smoke. Now, it also runs rough until the engine gets to operating temp, but continues to rough idle. I have my guesses, but don't want to repair what isn't broke (I most suspect the injection system).

I appreciate your thoughts

your diagnosis sounds right on but I would verify by putting a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel pressure port . key it on, let pump energize and monitor the pressure. I would guess that it won't hold stady, it'll bleed off indicating a fuel leak somewhere. It could also be in the tank or a line leak(which you didn't mention)but I doubt it. good luck-pressure gauge-verify where, fix. Good luck jp
