High Milage Poll (oil question)

I'm just curious.

I would like to hear form anyone with over 100k miles on their engine. What engine do you have? What weight oil do you use? (Brand is optional.) Do you switch oil weight in colder/warmer temperature? Primary use of your truck? (transportation, towing, work, ect.)

Thanks!

1994 Chevy K1500 with about 140,000 on the odo.

It's got the 305. All the power of a 4 banger and all the thriftyness of a 454.

I use Penzoil 10W30, changed every 3,000 miles, cold or hot, rain or shine.

At first, it was our primary vehicle. For the past 5 years it spends every other weekend driving 100 miles or so, then in 4-low getting me to the top of some mountain. The rest of the time it sets behind the house.

It's towed a 24' trailer for 8 years or so. I put the biggest aftermarket tranny coller on it I could find. I change the tranny fluid every other year or so, if I remember.

Never been inside the engine. Plugs, belts, alternators (lots of radios inside the cabin) and such is it.

225,000 miles and never burned/leaked a drop of oil.

Ford I-6 (sorry, I read both newsgroups)

10W30 when it's cool/cold, 10W40 in the summer. I've run 20W50 in extreme heat in the past, but not in a few years. Anything but Valvoline.

see above

Everything in the past, but it's primarily a dirt bike hauler now as I just got a new Silverado.

Hmmm,

1984 Nissan P/U truck Z24 2400cc motor 10W40, of what ever brand of oil my dad had around at the time. Never switched weights. Changed oil between 10000-30000 mile intervals!!! 214,000miles when sold burned/leaked (mainly leaked) 1 quart of oil every 6000-10000 miles. Driving the freeways about 3000 miles a month, sometimes 6000!

P.S. This was my first auto, and was babied until I got into the military, after that I didn't want to waste the time to maintain it!

Hi!

1984 GMC Sierra C1500, 6.2L Diesel +/- 219,000 miles.

Not babied at all...this truck has been treated mercilessly...not so much by myself, but the people (barbarians?) that had it before knew it was gonna get repo'd and they did what they could to destroy it.

It was just too tough for 'em. Took my dad and grandpa lots of nights to get it runnin' again, but they did and it survived the rural mail for at least

10 years. Then I got it and put on a starter and a flywheel (well, I guess on an automatic, it's a flexplate...but still...). Had to park it, seems we have a few major body problems and I can't afford two trucks right now. No reason it wouldn't be roadworthy in a heartbeat though. (In fact, it traveled the highways a while back in entirely less than legal fashion...as the junkman cometh to where it lived and struck fear into the hearts of things with wheels.)

Leaks oil only from a stupid vented oil cap. (Gonna fix that...) The motor is rather dirty from farm grime, but it uses very little oil and runs like a sewing machine. So far I've run Mystik's 10W30 in there...but come next oil change (probably before it gets killing cold out) I'll tempt fate and hope the ol' girl doesn't spew to high heaven with Mobil 1.

Someday there's a full restoration planned. I saw the junkyard squash another one like her yesterday...it looked brand new by compare except for the water heaters and crap stuffed everywhere in the bed and cab. Too bad, it would've been great for parts.

fashion...as

William,

Be sure to use an oil designed for diesels. Mobil 1 is designed for gas engines. I forget the name of their diesel oil.................Rotella isn't it?

Rotella T is Shell's synthetic... IIRC Delvac is Mobil's

Hi Doc!

Mobil 1 says on the bottle that it can be used in a Diesel engine....I'm gonna take their word for it...they prolly know a lot more about it than I do!

if you use Mobil Delvac 1, you're using mobil's synthetic *designed* for diesels.... not the synthetic designed for gassers that will "work". Delvac

1 isn't hard to find.... go 1 aisle over in walmart.
