Power windows issues

1995 Suburban, Power windows. Driver side window will 'stick' in the up position. Do not hear any noise from motor. Sometimes will last all day and come back to the truck the next day without doing anything and the window will work fine. I'm thinking it might be the rear track is hanging or causing the window to stick.

Thoughts?

Greetings,

Not hearing anything from the motor when you press the switch is good cause to consider a bad switch, bad connector, or bad relay. In other words it's something electrical and not mechanical. If the window was binding in the track then you would most likely hear the motor strain to move it when it sticks, but you're not so we'll stick with my first theory. Since it only happens in the Up position then I don't feel that it's a bad ground, which would cause the problem to happen in almost any position.

The first and easiest thing to do is change the power window relay. This is the least likely if only one window is acting up but it's worth a shot anyway. It is located in the electrical center under the hood. Relays are fairly cheap, and if you believe that the window may be binding in the track then the relay may trip when you try to roll the window down and you have to wait for it to reset.

Since the driver's window is only operated by one switch and it is the most used, then the odds are that it's a bad switch - specifically a weak or dirty contact or connector on the Down side of the switch. You can gently pry up the switch panel on the driver's door to gain access to the underside and check the connector to the switch. Wiggle the connector when the window isn't working to see if it starts to work. If so it may just be a bad or dirty pin in the connector that powers that particular window.

If the switch contacts feel mushy when you press the switch as compared to the other switches, then start considering replacing the switch itself. I can't remember exactly, but either you can replace just that single switch for that particular window or you may have to replace the entire group. I hope that you can get away with replacing just that one if you need to just to save you some money.

Cheers - Jonathan

Try using DeoxIT contact cleaner / rejuvenator. You can get it at RadioShack. Best stuff I ever used.

Try this..... hold the "down" button while slamming the door. My 99 Blazer gets "stuck" in the up position occasionally too.
