Sonoma: Change 5-Speed Trans Fluid?

Oct 19, 2004 2 Replies

My 1999 Sonoma has about 80K miles on it. Tranny is 5-speed manual, uses GM synchromesh transmission fluid (i.e., not gear oil.) No problems with the transmission but still I am wondering if that fluid should be changed. Owner's manual says that, unless you have been underwater, you never have to change the transmission fluid. "Never" seems like a long time. Does anyone have an opinion and/or experience to shed some light on whether this indeed needs to be changed?

I would change mine every 50,000 miles regarless of what the manual says. preventative maintanance is a wonderful thing!

I felt the same way. I have a 96 Silverado with the 5 speed. I go to a tranny shop that I trust for my Blazer with an auto trans and he said don't worry about it. Check the fluid level every year and don't abuse it. The tranny will be fine. I have over 130K on it now and it feels fine. Mike
