96 Intrepid Radio Installation

An after-market stereo can not be installed on the non-Infinity equipped 1996 Dodge Intrepid without using the following information:

This model has an amplifier in the trunk on the inside fender wall on the drivers side. It also has a fixed (non-power) antenna.

When wiring the new stereo all the diagrams on the Internet and in the

93-97 Chrysler/Dodge wiring kits indicate that the power antenna wire of the new radio is connected to the power antenna wire of the car's connector. This will not work. In this model the "power antenna" wire is used to provide power to the amplifier. (Remember this car has a fixed antenna.) If you wire the power antenna wire of the radio to the power antenna wire of the car's connector you will only send power to the amplifier when using the tuner. When a CD is inserted no power is supplied to the amplifier and the the result is crappy sound from just the front speakers.

To make a long story short: To wire this correctly you must connect the "amplifier" wire from the new radio to the "power antenna" wire in the car's connector. Leave the "power antenna" wire on the new radio unconnected.

These instructions are for the Non-Infinity system with amplifier in the truck. The instructions for Infinity equipped cars are already available on the Internet.
