96 Neon whining when turning right

Nov 15, 2003 0 Replies

I have a '96 Neon with 110000 miles on it. Recently when I turn right I am getting a whining noise from under the hood that has been getting worse. When driving straight I am also starting to hear a bit of whine from it. I am suspecting Power Steering as it gets much worse when turning right. I checked my fluid levels this morning and the PS fluid may be down just a touch. Any recommendations on what I should start checking? If it's the pump is that something I can do myself. I am fairly mechanically inclined but the tight quarters under the Neons hood tend to make me pause. If this was my '89 Century I'd have it in pieces tomorrow. :^) Oh and it may or may not matter this is the SOHC version and it has a dead AC unit (I only mention because it's on the same belt as the PS)

Thanks for the advice! Paul
