Chrysler neon 1999+

Jul 07, 2004 4 Replies

Hi all,

I'm a Brit and was looking for cars around the £5k mark which you dont see so often in the UK and one that came up was the chrysler neon 2.0 lx 2001. The spec impressed me for the value and low mileage.

Any views on this car?

I can only find very good reviews and the odd problem but overall seems like good car for the money.

One major fault is on the honestjohn website which says there is a problem with steering columns snapping but I can only find proof of this related to the mark I 1996-1999 model. The reviewer says he can't remember where he got his info from but this is a serious allegation.

Are there any known faults with the 1999+ mark II neon that I should know of?

Thanks!

L

Could you explain this in further detail as I am not so mechanically inclinded. Is this an expensive / difficult repair ... how common to occur... etc

Thanks L

I'd disagree with the prior poster.

From 1999 on, the headgasket problem was greatly reduced since Chrysler introduced a new multilayered steel headgasket.

The problems generally only occurred with the 1995 to 1998 models.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I have seen so many more problems with the earlier mark I as chrysler seem to have gotten their act together for the Mark II but their rep was damaged.

Any other comments you could provide with regard to the mark II? I am really worried about ending up with a car with endless bills but the luxury for the money and low mileage is a real temptation. The service periods are a little short but it doesnt bother me because I do that in a year anyway and so it fits my usage.

Thanks, L
