Evaporative Emission System Problem

Hi Group,

I just got a P0455 (Gross leak detected in the Evaporative Emission System. Should I be looking for a deteriorated hose? What is the best way to troubleshoot this? It's a 2002 Caravan SE.

First check to ensure the gas cap is in good shape and properly installed.

Is there a fast way to check the gas cap other than it looks visually ok and it appears to be fastening to the filler tube correctly? Thanks for your comments.

Service shops have gas cap testers. You probably don't. The only other fast way to check it is to substitute a new or known-good cap.

If the cap looks to be in good shape the only real way to check for leaks is with a smoke test, The shops with this equipment inject smoke into the evaporative system and any leaks show up as a dye or the actual smoke emitting from the leak. The two most popular leaks that will set a large leak on that van is the rubber hose under the van that runs to the canister and connects to the steel line. The other large leak is a small rubber hose under the air cleaner.

Glenn,

You hit it right on the nose!! Big crack in hose that runs to the canister and connects to the steel line. Thank you so much.

I think I got a code like that on my 96 Town and County once. I reset the codes and it never came on again. You might try that to make sure you really have a problem.
