Grand Voyager wiper weirdness

My 96 GV had the phantom wiper problem, but that was cured several years ago with a switch replacement. Now it has developed a new problem, also intermittent like the phantom wipe problem. Occasionally the delay and park functios of the wipers fail together. The wipers will only run continuously no matter whether the switch is in the intermittent range or full on. And when you turn them off, they stop ... right where they are at. Then a few minutes later all is fine again.

I haven't yet dug into the schematics to see if there is a separate control for the wipers or if this is another feature integrated into the BCM. My BCM already has one failed component (the rear wiper switch) and maybe this is yet another part going down the tubes. Anyone seen this problem and know the solution?

Hi Matt,

I believe your problem is the "park switch," which is integral to the wiper motor. The fix is to replace the wiper motor.

cheers!

Wonderful. Probably better than having to replace the BCM though. That is $360 or thereabouts.

Thanks, Matt

The LH cars have the same problem (I assume same design) - pretty much exclusively in cold weather. How they have gotten by without an NHTSA recall on this I'll never know since in the automotive design and legal world, the wipers are considered no less of a safety system than the brakes.

Look for a bad ground at the stud located at the base of the transmission dip stick.

I checked the service manual the the symptoms point to the wiper motor unit, more specifically the park switch is bad as Glenn suggested. Doesn't look like this one would likely be a bad ground.
