Importing used vehicles from Canada into USA

I'm wondering if anyone have experience in importing used vehicles into USA from Canada? Can you get the sales taxes back from Canadian government?

Thanks,

The federal Goods and Services Tax (7% GST) is refundable. It can be retrieved at border crossings which have that facility. This applies to anything purchased in Canada by Americans. I'm not sure about provincial taxes. You would have to check for the province where you are making the purchase.

If you are refering at buying a new vehicle in Canada, and bringing it to the US as new, Your warranty will be voided by the manufacturer. That is considered gray market. The vehicle is specifically manufactured to Canadian standards ( which is really a sticker) and most manufacturers, not only DC will void your warranty for buying and importing a new vehicle from another country. Military personnel or Government vehicles are exempt. And it is perfectly legal for the manufacturers to do this.

So I am wondering why you would do this as the Canadian dollar is much higher now and the price difference is almost negligible.

PST is paidat the licencing office - you pay when you register the vehicle. If you register it in Ontario, you pay the "non-refundable" tax. If you do not register it before exporting, the provoncial tax is not paid. Suspect it is similar in most provinces with possible exception of those using the combined tax.

he's buying a used vehicle, so he probably couldn't care less about the warranty being voided because it's probably allready expired.
